The Honorable William J. Clinton

President of the United States

The White House

1600 Pennsylvania Ave., NW

Washington, DC 20500

Dear Mr. President:

I am writing to urge you to establish an independent, bi-partisan commission to investigate the prosecution of Dr. Wen Ho Lee.

I am profoundly troubled about the terms of Dr. Lee’s nine-month incarceration. Despite not being charged with espionage, the prosecution mislead the court in order to confine Dr. Lee under extremely harsh conditions. This case damaged our commitment to protect civil rights and raised questions about whether racial profiling is rampant within the federal government.

I commend you for your remarks following the release of Dr. Lee and your commitment to the welfare of the Asian Pacific American community. Without appropriate action to address Dr. Lee’s case, however, we risk eroding progress already achieved as well as creating public distrust of the federal government.

Once again, I urge you to establish an independent and bi-partisan commission to fully investigate the prosecution’s handling of Dr. Lee’s case. The Congress and the American people deserve an answer. Thank you in advance for your continued leadership in matters concerning Asian Pacific Americans and Dr. Lee’s case. I look forward to working with you on this important matter.

With warm regards,

David Wu

Member of Congress
